Responsible Drinking

Responsible Drinking

Centuries of skill, culture and tradition are poured into the production of fine spirits and for hundreds of years people have enjoyed them while celebrating, while unwinding, and while socialising with family and friends.

We acknowledge, however, that our products can be and sometimes are misused by a minority. Spirits & Cocktails Australia and our member companies are strongly committed to the responsible consumption of alcohol. Our members are committed to:

  • the responsible marketing and promotion of distilled spirits;
  • supporting social programs aimed at reducing the harm associated with the excessive or inappropriate consumption of alcohol;
  • supporting the current quasi-regulatory regime for alcohol advertising; and
  • making a significant contribution to Australian industry through primary production, manufacturing, distribution and sales activities.

Spirits & Cocktails Australia is a signatory to the Alcohol Beverage Advertising Code (ABAC) and all Spirits & Cocktails Australia members abide by the Code.

The ABAC Scheme is a robust, quasi-regulatory system of alcohol marketing regulation. Marketing guidelines have been negotiated with government and complaints are handled independently. Industry bears all costs of administering the ABAC Scheme. ABAC signatories represent over 90% of alcohol producer media spend in Australia.

Spirits & Cocktails Australia is also a founding member of DrinkWise. DrinkWise is an independent, not-for-profit organisation. Founded in 2005 by the alcohol industry and government contributions, DrinkWise has played a significant role in the continued generational shift around Australians’ alcohol consumption.
